Rest as a Form of Self Care

Rest is an essential part of wellbeing, not something that must be earned or justified. This page offers a gentle way to reflect on rest as a form of care that supports your body, mind, and emotional health. Rest can look different for everyone and can change from day to day.

Expanding the idea of rest

Rest is not only sleep. It can include many forms of slowing down and reducing demand.

Rest might look like:

  • Sitting quietly for a few minutes

  • Taking a break from screens

  • Lying down or stretching

  • Spending time in a calm environment

  • Giving your mind a pause from problem solving

Any form of rest counts.

Noticing resistance to rest

It is common to feel resistance to rest, especially when you are used to staying busy or productive. You might gently notice any thoughts or feelings that arise when you consider resting.

You might notice:

  • Guilt or pressure to keep going

  • Fear of falling behind

  • Beliefs about needing to earn rest

Noticing resistance does not mean you have to change it right now.

Allowing small moments of rest

You do not need long periods of rest for it to be helpful. Small moments can support regulation and balance.

You might choose to:

  • Pause for a few breaths

  • Close your eyes briefly

  • Step away from a task

  • Sit in stillness for a moment

Small pauses can make a difference.
